Travel by road, crossing the equator into the Northern Hemisphere, and onward to the semi-arid expanse of the Samburu Game Reserve. The name "Samburu" stems from Maasai heritage; a 'samburu' denotes a traditional leather bag utilized by the Maasai for carrying honey and milk. This region is renowned for its expansive open landscapes, seasonal dried riverbeds, and striking red volcanic soil.
Indulge in dinner and spend the night at Samburu Sopa Lodge or Sarova Shaba Game Lodge.
Today, we embarked on a captivating journey through Samburu Game Reserve, beginning with an early morning game drive bathed in perfect light, ideal for capturing stunning photographic scenes amidst the abundant wildlife. Our exploration continued with mid-morning and afternoon game drives, offering ample opportunities to encounter the majestic felines that roam these lands. For those seeking a full day immersed in the reserve's wonders, we have the option of venturing out with picnic lunch boxes.
Additionally, there's an opportunity to visit the Samburu Village, where, at an extra cost, we can delve into the unique culture and traditions of the Samburu tribe. The reserve is renowned for its diverse array of wildlife, including species unique to this region. Here, one can encounter all three big cats—lion, cheetah, and leopard—alongside Samburu elephants and buffalo. The Ewaso Nyiro river teems with Nile crocodiles, adding to the richness of the ecosystem.
Among the park's other inhabitants are gerenuks, Grant's gazelles, Kirk's dik-diks, impalas, waterbucks, Grevy's zebras, Beisa oryxes, and reticulated giraffes. Bird enthusiasts will be thrilled by the over 400 species of birds found in Samburu Game Reserve, including the Somali ostrich, grey-headed kingfisher, sunbird, bee-eater, and marabou stork, to name a few.
After a day filled with adventure and discovery, we retreat for dinner and overnight stay at either Samburu Sopa Lodge or Sarova Shaba Game Lodge.
Early breakfast then check-out followed by an enroute game drive of the reserve thereafter drive back to Nairobi with drop off at your hotel or airport (lunch on own expenses on this day).
